What better time to get your hands dirty and get crafting with the kids than the Summer holidays. If you are stuck for crafting ideas, we are here to help with our favourite Summertime activities. Take a look!
Flower Power
Pressed flowers are perfect for making greeting cards or home-made art prints. If you have smaller children, they will need some adult help with this one. You will need:
- Pressable flowers, preferably a flat type like pansies.
- A Hammer
- Watercolour paper
- Wax paper
- Pens and a toothpick
Remove the stems from your flowers and place one face down on your watercolour paper, place a piece of wax paper over the top and gently ‘pound’ the flower with the hammer until all of the colour from the flower has been transferred to the watercolour paper. Peel the flower away (You might need a toothpick to help) Grab some pens to create an outline and a stem. Beautiful!
Summer Journal
This Summer scrapbook is perfect for recording all of those hazy Summer memories! Here’s what you’ll need:
- 5 paper lunch bags
- A stapler and glue
- Things to decorate! – stickers, buttons, pens, coloured paper, ribbon etc.
Place all of your paper bags together and fold them in half. Use the stapler to create a ‘spine’ along the folded edge on the left side to create a book with pages. The next step is to decorate however you like! Let the kids write their memories on the pages or glue in photos. Keep adding what you like over the Summer. You could also add ribbon or Velcro stickers when you are finished to keep the book closed.
Rainbow Bubbles
These bubbles look and smell amazing and the little ones will love making and playing with them! This is what you will need to get started:
- Small glass or plastic jars with lids
- Dish soap
- Food colouring (in all the colours of the rainbow)
- Essential oils
- Glycerine (or corn syrup)
- Coloured wire or pipe cleaners
- Wire cutters
Grab a jug and mix together 6 cups of water, 1 cup of dish soap and 1 tablespoon of glycerine. This is your base bubble solution so you can stop here and start blowing basic bubbles or continue to the next step for a scent and colour explosion!
Next divide the mixture into the small jars, leaving some space at the top to add different drops of food colouring and essential oil to each jar to create a rainbow effect! Finally, twist and shape your wire or pipe cleaners into different shaped bubble wands and have fun blowing different coloured bubbles!
