PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR WINTER - YOUR HANDY CHECKLIST

Preparing Your Home for Winter - Your Handy Checklist

The clocks have gone back and we are fast approaching winter. Whilst some of us will be looking forward to the cosy, dark evenings snuggled up with our loved ones, there are some things you can do to prepare your home for winter and avoid any surprises when the temperature plummets. Here’s our handy checklist on how to prepare your home for winter.

Fire up Your Boiler

It’s important to test your heating now before it gets really cold to make sure everything is working as it should. If you need to call in a plumber to see to your boiler because it’s not working, it’s better to find this out now before you really need it. Whilst you are paying attention to the heating and the boiler, also check if your radiators need bleeding and get it ticked off your winter checklist.

Clean up Your Garden

When winter hits, we turn our attention to inside our homes but are there any outstanding garden tasks left on the list? Take a look around your garden, are there any remnants of summer that need to be packed up and stored away including garden furniture, toys or potted plants that need to be protected from the frost or brought inside? Do it now and your future summer self with thank you for it.

Check Your Windows and Doors

Are there any cracks, holes or damage to your windows and doors that could potentially let in a draught come winter? If the cracks aren’t serious you may be able to solve them yourself with sealant, if you aren’t sure then always seek the advice of a professional. It might also be worth investing in heavier drapes or curtains to keep out the cold and reduce your energy usage.

Prepare for a Power Cut

Power cuts can strike at any time and this can harder to deal with in the winter months when there is less daylight. It’s always a good idea to have a power cut ‘kit’ to hand including candles, torches, spare batteries, blankets, games or anything else to make a dreaded power cut pass by more quickly.

Get Security Conscious

Unfortunately, with a lot of people still out at work in the darker evenings of winter, this time of year is a prime time for an increase in break ins. With this in mind, you should review your current home security. Start by checking the obvious things like broken fence panels, gate latches, window catches or ladders and garden equipment left out. If your garden is clear and your home is as secure as it can be, it might also be worth considering getting cameras or extra security equipment installed as an extra precaution.

How are you preparing for the winter months? Is there anything you do which is not on this list? We would love to hear your thoughts.
