There is no doubt, moving home is exciting for all, but for children, especially younger ones, moving day might be a worry for them as everything they know is about to change. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit more explanation and reassurance to settle little nerves about the big day.
Let them Know What’s Happening and When
Preparation is key with small children and letting them know what is going to be happening and when it’s going to happen makes everyone’s lives easier in the long run. If your children are very young, it could be as simple as telling fun stories about moving house and counting down the sleeps until the big day.
Talk to Them About Their New Home/Room
Get excited, show enthusiasm and let it rub off on the kids as you describe what the new house will be like, how exciting it is that they will get their own room now or how fun will it be when there is a big park right across the road! Find the positives for them and relay it in a way they can understand.
Describe the Adventure and Let Them Get Involved
Packing up your belongings might be a headache for you but your children will love to get involved. Sometimes this can be more of a hindrance than a help to you though, so consider setting them their own little task list and give them some of their own responsibility so they feel important too. This could involve packing their own clothes or their most favourite toy for the journey.
Explore the New Area Ahead of Moving Day
A good way to get children used to the idea of moving is by exploring the new area ahead of time. Point out the house, the parks, the shops, the walks and all the things you know they will love. If they will be starting a new school, could a visit be arranged before their first day so they can see for themselves what it’s going to be like?
