OUR TOP ORGANISATIONAL TIPS FOR SMALL HOMES

Our Top Organisational Tips for Small Homes

There are so many benefits to a smaller home, they are somewhat cosier and easier to maintain than larger properties but if you live in a small home yourself, you might be wondering how you can fit everything in and stay organised. Read on for our top tips!

Make an Inventory

A good place to start with your organisation mission is to make an inventory of what items you have to start with, then you can begin to figure out where it will all go. When you come across duplicate items or items that serve the same purpose, you will need to be ruthless and sell, donate or recycle them quickly.

De-Clutter Regularly

Houses can get filled up and cluttered very easily. It’s worth setting aside an amount of time, say every six months where you carry out a big de-clutter of your house and remove anything you don’t need anymore. A good rule of thumb is to choose an item and ask yourself a few questions, is it broken? Do we need it? Do we want it? Or does it serve a purpose?. If you are sorting clothing, does it fit and have you worn it in the last year?.

Get Creative & If You Can’t Go Out, Go Up

It’s time to get creative with your space and utilise any storage opportunities you have.

If you don’t have much floor space to work with, look around and see if there is any way you can go up with shelving or cupboards to use excess wall space instead. If you find certain areas like the hallway accumulate clutter then try creating a dedicated drop zone by adding shelves, hooks or a storage unit.

The One in One Out Rule

This rule is simple and easy to stick to. When something new comes into your home, remove something old. When you follow the one in one out rule, you will never end up with piles of things with nowhere to put them. This rule is a great one for kids toys too and will teach them to let go of items they no longer play with.
