There are many reasons why Nottingham is popular with house buyers, and the jobs on offer in the city is an important factor.
New offices in Nottingham are set to open in early 2022 and it will affect close to 2,000 employees in Nottingham.
HMRC is set for a new local home, and they will move into the Unity Square office block next year. The Government department has been based in Castle Meadow Road, by the canal. Next year, employees will work in Queensbridge Road, opposite Nottingham Railway Station.
A new start for many Nottingham employees in 2022
For many employees, this will be more convenient, and of course, any change which brings jobs and optimism to an area is of benefit.
It is not as if there will be many new jobs created by this development, but by the time next year rolls around, working practices will be different. The local area surrounding the office block will benefit from more people coming in.
An HMRC spokeswoman said: “The Government Hub in Nottingham, Unity Square, is expected to open in early 2022. We are creating modern and collaborative future workspaces, and, when it is open, will accommodate around 4,000 HMRC colleagues alongside colleagues from other Government departments.”
When the project at Unity Square was approved, there was also outline permission granted for an additional office block close-by. This block would be taller, with the 13 storeys standing slightly taller than the 10 storeys the new HMRC building will comprise of.
New homes might be heading to Nottingham
Of course, while this new building ushers in a new start for many people in the local area, it brings an end to the HMRC premises at Castle Meadow Road. Plans have been submitted to change the use of these offices into 332 one and two-bedroom apartments.
Approval was granted for the change of use, although this was subject to certain conditions being met.
In 2019, a spokesman for Mapeley Estates Limited, the owners of the buildings occupied by HMRC, said: “Mapeley is currently evaluating options for the site and is not therefore in a position to comment any further at this time.”
When the HMRC lease ends in 2022, they will have no involvement with the Castle Meadow site. The Castle Meadow site was opened in 1995, and many people will have fond memories of working there.
Speaking previously, Nicole Newbury, HMRC director and senior sponsor for the Nottingham Regional Centre, has previously spoken about the centre, saying; “We can’t wait to move into our new regional centre. The new building is so much more than just bricks and mortar, it represents an exciting opportunity for us to utilise new technology and develop collaborative, new ways of working.”
