Moving home is without a doubt one of the most stressful things we can face as humans and we know what is going on. It goes without saying that this can also be a very anxious time for pets too as everything they know as normal is changing and they don’t know why. Here are our top tips to make the transition as smooth as possible for you and your pet.
Get a Sitter
Is there a friend or family member who would be willing to take care of your pet on moving day? This is the best option possible as it keeps them out of harm’s way and they will be in a safe, secure place until you are ready to collect them. If this isn’t possible, it’s a good idea to confine your pet to a room where they feel safe, surrounded by their belongings and plenty of food and water until you are ready to transfer them to their new home. A few weeks before you move, get your pet used to being put into any pet carriers you want to use on the day to avoid any surprises.
Pack an Overnight Bag
Just the same as you, your pet will miss their home comforts when you land in your new place. Pack an overnight bag and ensure they have everything they need for the first day and night in their new home to help them feel safe. This could include a blanket or bed, food and treats or any medication they might need.
Update Important Information
If your pet is microchipped or you will be moving to a completely new area, it is wise to update their information in advance of moving day so it doesn’t get forgotten. Change the address on any microchips, seek out a vet in your new town and request that your old vet sends on your pets records as soon as possible.
Enjoy and Explore!
The most important thing you can do after you move with your pets is enjoy each other’s company whilst you get used to your new routine and explore your new surroundings together. Although you might get some uncharacteristic behaviour from your pet initially, things will begin to settle after a few weeks as you all begin to relax and settle into a new way of life.
