How to Reset Your Home Now the Kids Have Gone Back to School

Have your little ones just started school or have your ‘not so little ones’ gone back to school? You might be feeling a bit lost without them or maybe you have a million and ones things to do with the bit of extra time. Whatever your circumstances, your house could probably do with a reset after a hazy, fun filled summer. Here are our top tips:

Clear the Clutter

The first thing to do on your house reset mission is to clear the clutter so you can see what needs to be done. Start by gathering up any broken items or toys and taking them straight to the local tip to be disposed of or recycled. Next, gather up any items or toys in good condition that you don’t want and take them directly to your local charity or list them on your local marketplace. The trick is to remove the clutter from your home immediately to avoid random piles of clutter abandoned around the house along with your motivation.

Donate Clothes

Kids grow FAST and the clothes that fit your children this year are highly unlikely to fit them next year. If you still have wardrobes full of winter clothes from last year, it’s worth going through them to see what will and won’t fit the kids this autumn/winter and get rid of the ones that don’t. Again, sort the items into two piles, one pile for the bin/rags and one pile for donation to friends, family or charity and remove them from the house immediately.

Adopt Organisation Systems

A good organisation system will see you through this school year and beyond and can make your home run more smoothly. If your children have a lot of extra-curricular activities or appointments, a simple family calendar is the perfect solution. Place a large calendar in a high traffic area in your home (a weekly or monthly, wipe clean one is ideal) and if your children are older, task them with adding their weekly commitments in their own colour marker so everyone can see at a glance what everyone else is doing.
