If you don’t own the home you live in, you might be wondering if there are any small, less intrusive changes you can make, to make your home more ‘green’ and to help cut down on your bills every month. Here are our suggestions to help make your home more energy efficient, the tenant edition.
Do the Little Things
All the little things you can do each day to save energy are hardly noticed as you do them, but they add up! Turn your thermostat down by one degree, shorten your showers by a few minutes every time, turn down the radiators and close the doors of rooms you don’t use often. Also remember to turn the lights off when you leave a room, It might not seem like a lot but you will notice a difference over time.
Get Kitchen Smart
Keep your fridge and freezer as full as possible and turn them down to the lowest setting you can whilst still keeping your food safe. This means that they don’t have to work as hard, saving electricity. Regularly hoovering the coils at the back of your fridge/freezer is also a clever and fairly unknown way to keep your appliance running as efficiently as possible.
Switch Providers
Sometimes, simply switching the supplier of your gas and electricity can save you money from year to year on your energy bills. It is well worth taking a look around every year or two to see who is doing the best deals and the cheapest prices on home fuel, the results of this and how much money you could save may surprise you.
Talk to Your Landlord
Have you spoken to your landlord? There might be something they can do regarding the property you live in to make it more energy efficient. This will benefit you as the current tenant and also them in the long run if they decide to sell somewhere along the line. There might also be grants available for them to get insulation installed in the walls or roof space.
We hope these tips have been helpful to you as a tenant trying to become more energy efficient, if you are a landlord and you need more tailored suggestions to create an energy efficient home for your tenants, read our previous ‘Landlord Edition’ blog here or feel free to talk to our team who will do their best to guide and advise you.
