Is there anything more exciting than the first night in your new home? Unfortunately, what is not at the top of most peoples’ list is the actual ‘moving’ part and is up there with one of the most stressful things we can inflict upon ourselves. With this in mind, we have created a list of our top tips on making moving home less stressful.
Make a Master List
Lists are very useful and are a vital part of staying sane when you are moving home; there are so many different things to remember, it makes sense to gather them all up and create some order. Before your subsequent move, invest in a small notebook to jot down your home moving ‘to-do- list items as and when they come in to your mind, this can be organised later into main tasks, sub-tasks and a timeline. Also, remember to include upcoming tasks such as utility disconnections and post redirection.
Use a Removal Company
If you aren’t a very organised person or you have a lot of items or particularly heavy belongings, a removal company can be worth their weight in gold. Depending on the company you use, they will pack, label, remove and deliver your items right to your new home with minimal disruption and stress for you. This approach will give you chance to stop and breathe or get some preparation done in your new home.
Put Your Belongings in the Correct Room
Something as simple as putting your boxes in the correct room when you arrive at your new home can save you hours of stress when you come to unpack. Ensure you label the boxes with not only the contents but the room they are destined for in the new place. Start packing as early as you can for non-essentials and remember to pack one room at a time to stay organised and on track.
Slow and Steady
When you have written your master list, start ticking it off early! Tackling one or two tasks every day or a couple of times a week whilst you have plenty of time is preferable to trying to cram in everything a few weeks before you up sticks. Working this way will ensure that nothing is forgotten and you get everything done before moving day.
And finally…. Take care of you, leading up to the move, on moving day and beyond your first night in your new home. Prepare well, know your limitations, pack your toothbrush and get enough sleep.
