6 Top Tips for Gardening During The Winter Months

Do you have green fingers? Are you the outdoorsy type? If so, winter can feel like a very long season to be cooped up in the house in the cooler part of the year. If you feel like getting out for some icy fresh air this winter to do a bit of gardening, here are our top tips for you…

Prepare Your Garden for Summer

Just because it’s not summer doesn’t mean you can’t prepare for its arrival! To get your flower beds summer ready, just find a weeded or grassy area you would like to turn into a flower bed and place piles of newspaper or cardboard down. Put organic matter such as straw and compost over the top and in the spring, the area will be ready to plant your new flowers.

Keep Watering

If the weather is dry for a while and if the ground isn’t covered with snow or ice, stick to your regular watering schedule as this is beneficial to your garden and plants. For wintery dry spells, aim to water your garden once a week to keep it healthy and hydrated.

Protect Your Potted Plants and Bring Delicate Plants Inside

Some of your more delicate plants could benefit from some extra protection during the colder spells. Bring the more tender plants and flowers inside and give outdoor potted plants some extra attention by moving them to more sheltered areas such as closer to the house or under the eaves of your property.

Put Out Food for the Wildlife

You can’t enjoy your garden as much in the winter compared to summer but the local birds and wildlife would be really love some extra help in the harsher months when they don’t find it as easy to forage for food. Leaving out nuts, seeds, fat balls and water for the smaller species is a big help to them and great to watch from your window.
