Spring has sprung upon us. If you are looking forward to spending some time in your garden this Spring, we have compiled a list of essential gardening tips for homeowners. Take a look.
Revitalise!
Your plants and soil probably need some much needed TLC and moisture after the changeable Winter weather and now is a good time to revitalise them. Add some moisture using mulch or compost or use a light sprinkler to distribute water evenly. This will help the soil become more pliable and easier to plant in.
Clean Up
Spring isn’t just for cleaning your house! Your garden could probably do with a bit of a clean-up operation after the cold Winter months. Tidy away any rubbish or unused items and give the outside of your windows and doors a wash so you can see all of your hard work in the garden from the inside too. Clean up the old dead leaves and weeds, sweep the paths and enjoy.
Prune
It’s important to prune your existing plants to keep them healthy and strong all year round but don’t get too prune happy in the Spring to avoid cutting off new buds which will be forming. Remove any excess or dead leaves or wood to direct and nurture healthy new growth.
Begin Planting
Primrose, daffodils and pansies are all good plants to begin potting and planting in the Springtime as they are more hardy to late cold snaps. If vegetables or herb gardens are your thing, now is the perfect time to watch them flourish and they will be ready in time for the Summer BBQ. Carrots, lettuce, peas, mint and parsley are all great choices and fairly easy to grow.
Keep the Birds Happy
Wild birds are lovely to watch in your garden and they will reduce the pests and bugs in your space as an added bonus. If you don’t want to purchase a bath or bird feeder for the birds, consider re-using plastic bottles and making your own. Bird food can also be homemade and is as simple as mixing up some seeds, nuts and melted fat or lard together and balling them up.
